Slimming World Struggles


For the last two weeks Slimming World hasn’t been going too well for me. Last week I gained and this week I maintained 😐 I am so close to my half a stone reward but right now I feel like I will never get there!

Sometimes I think my job in Eurospar isn’t good for Slimming World. When I work long hours I don’t eat right and usually have more syns than allowed. I need more self-control! I wanted to join Slimming World to lose weight, no point in wasting my time by not sticking 100% to the plan!!

So this week I am going to stick to plan 100% and get my half stone award in the next week or two 👍

So the plan for this week is:

   »Drink lots of water – Water is     something I rarely drink and I think this may be affecting my weight loss. I love ice cold water so time to stock up on the ice cubes!! Hopefully drinking water will stop me drinking fizzy drinks which make me want chocolate!

»Fill up on Speed Foods – If I eat more speed food I won’t be hungry which means I won’t want chocolate or sweets!

»Plan ahead – Plan what I will be bringing to work when I am working long hours and have no money with me so I won’t be able to buy chocolate!!

So I went to Cork…

I spent two nights in Cork recently and had a great time. Myself and Gavin stayed in Jurys Inn which is close to everything in the city. 👍Before we went to Cork both of us did some research to find some Coeliac Friendly restaurants and cafés where I could eat.

Here are the places we tried out:

  • Scoozi Restaurant  We just stumbled across Scoozi’s while looking for somewhere to get breakfast on our first day. By chance  I saw that their waffles on their menu said “Gluten Friendly” so Gavin went in and asked if they were gluten-free and the waiter said yes! Lets just say I had the biggest smile on my face 😆 They had two different toppings for the waffles, one was Berries, Yoghurt and Maple Syrup and the other was Chocolate and Cream. I was very tempted to get the chocolate and cream waffles but decided to try to be good (for the sake of Slimming World)  and get the one with Berries, Yoghurt and Maple Syrup. That probably wasn’t much better 😛 The waffles were extremely good! Maybe I was just way too excited to have waffles for the first time in 2 years! Everyone in there was friendly and there seemed to be a lot of locals which is always a good sign. From what I can remember they also had a gluten-free chocolate cake and gluten-free cupcakes. I did not have a chance to try those this time but there is always next time 😀

  • Idaho Cafe  We were originally meant to go here on the day we arrived in Cork but Gavin never checked the opening hours so when we arrived it was closed! However we did go there on our last day in Cork, we were too late for breakfast so I ended up getting a Chocolate cake with cream. Not the best thing to be having the day of weigh-in. It was very rich but very tasty. I quickly glanced on the menu and saw they did gluten-free toast for breakfast and their lunch options are also gluten-free. The people in their were very friendly and I would happily go there next time I am in Cork to try put their lunch options.
  • Nandos You can’t beat a Nandos when you are hungry! Gavin and I were starving on the first day and after having a wander around the city we decided to have a Nandos. I had been wanting a Nandos forever so I was more than happy to go there for dinner. My first time going to Nandos as a Coeliac they provided me with a big book that showed all the ingredients in their dishes. This was extremely helpful and since that day I have ordered the same things! This information is also provided on the menu on their website. When I go to Nandos I have Planish Chicken Butterfly (I’m not good with hot stuff!!), Spicy Rice and Chips. I love Nando’s Spicy Rice ❤ The Nandos in Cork was very big with lots of room. We got a booth which was cool! 🙂
  • CoqBull This was the place we were most excited to visit! Everything gluten-free on both their menu online and in the restaurant was clearly marked.The menu consists of Coq (Chicken) or Bull (Beef burgers and other things).  It had a very trendy atmosphere. I ordered a Half Roast Chicken with CoqBull fries and Chicken Gravy. Not going to lie I was very excited about the gravy and it did not disappoint! It was all very tasty and I would certainly go back there again. There was also a Bunless Bull Burger available for those who would prefer a burger. Gavin had a burger and it looked delicious but I think my Chicken was better 😛

Other Gluten-Free places we found in Cork but did not try were:

  1. Milanos I have been to Milanos before and really enjoyed it.
  2. Fenns Quay Everything on their menu online is clearly marked and they have gluten-free bread available.
  3. SoHo Bar and Restaurant They had a range of gluten-free options available.
  4. The Cornstore Restaurant Has some gluten-free tenner lunch options and dinners.
  5. The Meatball Place We passed this place but the menu didn’t appeal to us. Many gluten-free options though.
  6. Gourmet Burger Bistro A Gluten-free bun is available for the burgers. Their menu online also shows all the gluten-free options.

So for any Coeliac visiting Cork they should definitely try Scoozi’s for Waffles (before 12pm) and CoqBull for their Chicken Gravy! 😀

I lost 2lb tonight!! 😱


Tonight was my second weigh in for Slimming World!! All week I was dreading the weigh-in, having a Chinese Saturday night was probably not the best idea!

To my surprise I was down 2lb this week! I’m not sure how it happened but I am not complaining!! 🎉 🎆

For the next 12 weeks in Slimming World there is going to be a different challenge set to the group. Last week it was Scan Bran, sounds like I had a lucky escape not being able to do that one! This week’s challenge is to have 1 cup of Speed Soup a day. 🍵 I am looking forward to this challenge as it seems to be do able!

During the Image Therapy session lots of people were giving their recipes and ideas for Speed Soup. It sounded like many people are just going to put all the Speed Food they have into a pot and make it into a soup! That doesn’t appeal to me at all!! 👎 I have also been looking up different Speed Soups and have decided to make a Spicy Roast Root Vegetable Soup. I got the recipe from the Slimming World Website!

Fingers Crossed this week’s loss goes as well as tonight’s!! 👍

My love for Boojum! :D

One of my favorite places to eat in Dublin is Boojum! 😀 I could eat it all day everyday! For those of you who don’t know Boojum is a cheap and cheerful Mexican Burrito Bar. Obviously Coeliacs can’t eat Burritos but we can eat Burrito bowls 🙂 On their menu it clearly states what is gluten-free which is always a lifesaver when I am looking for food.

When I go to Boojum I always get the same thing – A Burrito bowl with Chicken or Beef, Pinto Beans, Mild Salsa, Sour Cream and Cheese! And a bag of Nachos to share! The Burrito Bowl is massive but I somehow still manage to eat nearly all of it :O It’s ok to be a savage in Boojum!! 🙂

On their website menu it is not marked what is Gluten free but when you go into Boojum the menu boards clearly state what is. Because everything is prepared in front of you it is easy to see if any cross-contamination may happen! I have been there plenty of times and have never had any problems with their food!

You should definitely try it next time you see one 🙂

I joined Slimming World!

So I took the plunge last week and joined my local Slimming World Group. It has been something I’ve wanted to do since after Christmas but never felt motivated to do it. I did do Slimming world before but I never put the effort into it so I never lost much. Now I am determined to work hard and get rid of some extra pounds.

So last Wednesday, after foolishly eating dinner I went up and joined the Slimming World group. This time I  attended the New Members talk which made me understand how the plan actually works. The Image Therapy talk was also different to the ones I went to previously. Last time during Image Therapy the consultant went through everyone there and told the class how much they lost or gained. This made me self-conscious when I did gain and once I got weighed I would leave. However this consultant gives updates on new products or recipes and other general information. People are free to ask questions at any stage or talk about something that may be getting in the way of their meal plan. I definitely prefer this way and will stay for Image Therapy. I think this will help me keep on track and introduce new ideas/recipes into my plan.

As soon as I came home from Slimming World it was time for me to figure out what I could have as my HEB. Thankfully there was a lot of options including Lidl’s Just Free Multigrain Sliced Pan (2 slices) and Schar Ciabatta Roll (1 roll). While I was looking up HEB options I also looked up Syn values for many of the gluten free biscuits I eat. Schar Digestives are only 1 and 1/2 syns while the Bourbons are 3 syns each. I know which ones I will be choosing!! 🙂 Although they can be enjoyed once I keep to my 15 syns a day!!

So I have been surprised and found this week easy to manage. I have counted my syns everyday and kept my food diary. I will be attending a Slimming World class tomorrow so hopefully the scales will be kind to me :S For next week I am going to work on improving my water intake and upping the amount of Speed foods I am eating. Plenty more Speed food will help me save my syns for a nice treat at night 😀

New Year, New Me?

So it’s that time of year again! The time of year where I make New Years Resolutions that I promise to keep. I am 22 years old and don’t think I have ever kept one for a whole month. But for some reason I think 2016 will be different!

Here are the Resolutions I will keep:

1. Stick to the Gluten Free Diet!

Sometimes I wish that I could just be normal for a day aka I want to eat lots of Gluten. And sometimes I do. I may have a sneaky piece of chocolate that is not Coeliac friendly or something else. I am guaranteed to feel terrible afterwards but I continue to do it. This year I am going to stick to the diet 100%! I know it will make me feel way better in the long run.

2. Shift some Extra Pounds!

Last year I joined Slimming World which worked for me but was hard being the only Coeliac at the group. A lot of advice given by the leader did not help me at all. This time I am going to try and get rid of some extra weight by myself.

3. Write more Blog Posts!

When I set up this site I had great plans on what to write about, but I only got around to writing a total of two posts in over a year!! This year I hope to write a lot more, some ranting, some reviews and some general Coeliacness!
